I thought I would share with you all, the wonderful site Groupon.co.uk that I have recently come across and through which I have now enjoyed about ten amazing deals.
Groupon started in 2008 in the USA and was created by Andrew Mason and is reputed to be the fastest growing company in the world! See: http://www.forbes.com/forbes/2010/0830/entrepreneurs-groupon-facebook-twitter-next-web-phenom.html. Another internet company genius as he is only 29 year old! We will probably be seeing a film about him in a few years time. I just wish my sons or daughter or even I could come up with one of these genius ideas. Anyway at least I can benefit from his idea in buying the deals on there.
The site works on bulk buying and so a deal is offered and providing enough people purchase the deal then it goes ahead. If there are not enough takers then your money is refunded so don't worry. I have never had a deal not go through as most are very popular and the more people that join of course the more deals that go through. I have also discovered that if you buy your deal by going through www.topcashback.co.uk first, then you also get cashback making it even better value. It is quite tricky to remember this as the deals come in to your email inbox , you then get excited click on the ‘view now’ link and so you have to think carefully to then go back and click through the cashback site as it is all too easy to buy it straight after the initial viewing click.
The offers change from day to day and are different for the different parts of the country as many of them are from local businesses. Most of the deals that you buy have to be used within a certain length of time, often three months but sometimes the time is longer. I have bought deals for my home area and for London as we often go down to stay with my daughter and so these deals mean we can take them out for a meal for a lot less than they would normally cost. Sometimes as little as 25 pounds for three courses and a drink for two people which I think is a great bargain.
The deals are from a variety of businesses and I have had meals, haircuts, massages, car valeting to name but a few. I have see week end stays, Segway tours, paintballing, spa treatments and seven MOTs for the car too.
Those of you who have read my reviews before will remember the deal I got for the Japanese restaurant that we went to after the ciao meet in London last summer, that was a Groupon deal. We also had a delicious brunch (which turned out to be breakfast AND Sunday lunch not just a big breakfast) at Altitude360 with a wonderful view of the London Eye and we paid about 39 pounds a head for that. That probably sounds quite expensive but it was a magnificent spread with a cocktail and with views that would be hard to better in London. Recently I have had a car valet for 9 pounds instead of 27 pounds.
Initially I was quite skeptical but I read about the site on Martin Lewis's money saving site I felt much more confident. I know Martin Lewis only recommends ones that can be trusted so after that I bought my first deal. That one was fine and since then I have introduced my family to the site and we have all bought several different types of deals and they have all been excellent value.
If you recommend someone else to buy a deal and they join the site and buy a deal then you get 6 pounds off your next deal. I have had one 6 pound bonus but somehow others seem to have slipped through unrewarded but I’m not sure that the people I sent the link to went through my link or went straight to Groupon. As each deal is promoted it says ‘get xxx number of people to buy the deal and you get yours free’. I am not sure whether that works if the person you send the link to is already a Groupon member or if they have to be a newbie.
I was talking to the hairdresser who was cutting my hair through one of the deals and she said they had had over 300 people take up the deal. Apparently Groupon take a big % of the amount we pay and the business gets the rest. They usually run the deal at a loss but hope that by doing it they get more customers so they use it as part of their advertising budget. I really don’t care why they do it but long may it continue as our family has had some really great bargains.
My husband’s favourite was for 19 pounds he got a round of golf for two around the 18 holes, then another round the 9 hole course plus lunch, coffee and 100 balls on the driving range. He came back quite tired but well pleased with the deal. We bought two deals so four of them spent the day out for less than a tenner each including lunch and a cup of coffee or tea as well.
It is not the sort of site where you go to look for something specific. I have signed up for emails for all the areas I am interested in and every day I just have a quick look to see what they are offering. If it is not of any interest a quick click deletes it but sometimes something exciting pops up and we buy it. They also make great gifts as the voucher comes with the full value of the deal NOT what you paid for it. So the golf voucher had nearer 80 pounds value on it but we paid only 19pounds. The recipient would only see the bigger amount as that is the value of the voucher
Once you have you voucher confirmed you usually get an email but you can access them through the site by logging on to your account on Groupon and clicking on recent deals/purchases. You then print off the voucher and this needs to be taken with you to wherever you are receiving the goods or service. Prior to going though you have to phone and book telling them that you have a Groupon voucher. They will ask you for a couple of numbers from the voucher and then once it is booked you must not forget to still take the voucher with you. Not really to tricky but it is important as you may miss out on the deal if you don’t.
I have absolutely no hesitation at all in telling everyone about how great this site is. If you have not already come across it take a look as you will find something of interest I am convinced. If you have heard of it but have been unsure then hesitate no more. You do get value always. Sometimes you get good value and other times it is really great value so hesitate no longer, go on over and take a look. Do not dismiss it after one look as the deals are so varied, weeks go past and I see nothing of interest but then one week I will see three things that appeal. You have to buy it on the day as they last only one day, occasionally they are available the next day but I missed out on something yesterday thinking I’d have another chance today but it is no longer there. There are always great value deals, something for everyone so look and be patient and something will spark your interest.
The site is very easy to use and everything is explained on the site as you click through the various links. It does save your card details for buying if you want it to so it saves you hunting for your credit card if you are making a purchase. Just don’t forget to go through topcashback to get further benefits.
