Xdrive Technologies has announced the end of its free service. Although the announcement was dressed up to claim that this was in response to customer demands for an improved service, the suspicion must be that the money has run out. Xdrive Technologies has announced the end of its free service. Although the announcement was dressed up to claim that this was in response to customer demands for an improved service, the suspicion must be that the money has run out. They propose to offer a subscription only Xdrive Plus service from the end of April. Existing free accounts will be deleted at that time.
Prices per month for the new Xdrive service are based on the space required; $4.95 for the first 25MB, $2.95 for subsequent blocks of 25MB, $6.95 for an additional 100MB. There don’t seem to be any extra services currently offered. There is a free 15-day trial period available for those registering now.

Xdrive, in common with a number of other companies, offers on line data storage. The basic concept is that the user can store data in a central server and access it from any location. This allows for a single user to get at his files from, for example, work and home. Alternatively it allows shared access by a group of users to common data. This, in principle, allows some of the benefits of networking without the costs of installing a network. In practice, unless you have a high bandwidth connection to the internet, the download times are so slow, for anything other than the smallest files, that I don’t believe it would be used in a business environment for any more than the smallest applications. Possibly it might be of use for maintaining central schedule information or price lists.
As a free service Xdrive offered some benefits for the odd occasion when you wanted to transfer a file that was too large for a floppy or to maintain backup copies off site. As a subscription service it has attractions only for those with high bandwidth connections. In that market there are many more ways to share information, most of which will be more efficient. The market, which would potentially have most to gain, field-based operations or sales staff, will be handicapped by the slow connections they will invariably be using.
Overall, I find it difficult to recommend this service unless you have a specific application in mind. Remember that access times are likely to be poor for users operating on a dial up connection.
Advantages: free up your own hard drive space, easy to transfer files to friends Disadvantages: none unless xdrive folds
Have you got enough storage capacity on your PC? Do you think you could do with a bit more MB in space on your hard drive. You have several options a) buy a new PC with bigger hard drive b) delete a lot of your files or transfer them to disk or maybe c) join xdrive.
What's XDRIVE? It's basically just like having another hard drive, really. It's an online storage system where you join the web site, login and then you can access the files you've stored ... ...it sound, if I did. All you need to do is upload the files you want to store, from your computer and thats it. Just like many photo and picture storage systems that you can find on the net too - but for files. There is also a piece of software which makes life even easier with a Windows Explorer® interface. To move/copy files to or from your xdrive you can just drag and drop using the software. Easy. Using your own space in the xdrive account means ...

Advantages: Online storage Disadvantages: You have to pay
X Drive, like so many other online storage web sites, is badly let down by many factors.
One of its biggest problem facing it is now you have to pay for the priviledge of storing stuff and using it.
My first interaction with X-Drive was not through choice.
I forget what it was now but something I was once downloading would not burn down to your machine directly. It had to go to X Drive first.
It was just a con to get you to join up to X Drive.
... ...This was great because you could download stuff to X Drive instantly rather than taking hours downloadig stuff to your hard drive.
Sounds good but remember this...
You still have to download it to your hard drive in the end if you want to use it so it seems a pointless step.
A lot of cracked Gaming sites use these online storage sites so that they get referral money for redirecting you. After all, they have to get some money if they are giving ...

Last week was the end of free online storage as offered by X-drive.com. It was a good service. It was perfect for me and had so many uses. When we had group projects to complete we would store them online and four or five of us would have access to this service. We shared the password and we were allocated quite a lot of space.
Although, the downloads were slow once on the site, they were easily accessed. You are required to sign up for this service, ... ...since we only used X-drive.com for study purposes and it contained no confidential files, we shared the password and username. On April 26 however, X-drive technologies replaced the old service. All old accounts have been deleted. Luckily, we were notified via e-mail about the change. But a friend I know didn’t know and left her work on, and now it has been deleted. Although, she had had back-up, rough drafts her master copy that was online ...

Yes I was seduced by the thought of extra space in hyperspace so signed up. I have regretted this move for 3 months now.
Maybe I am stupid or maybe I have an internal error in my system but I have had to rebuild my computer to get rid of the all pervading fingers of X-Drive throughout my system.
X-Drive promised me 25Mb of extra storage for free. This comes with a small programme you have to download so your computer can access this extra storage. ... ...system files to the net and, no doubt, provides X-Drives advertisers with information about you so that they can insert advertising into many of your applications. I disagree with this philosophy of computer snooping as a rule but when the advertising started sending my virus checker into hyperdrive warning me about every known trojan in the world I started to get freezes throughout my system. I have only just recovered and it has necessitated 2 ...

Advantages: Loads of space, referral system, desktop-account mapping, it's free! Disadvantages: Slow website, BIG download bugs
X-Drive is yet another one of those free web storage providers. But X-Drive has many features that allow it to outdo it's rivals, such as I-Drive (spit) and Driveway.
The X-Drive website is quite hard to navigate, and also quite annoying (frames, tables, mega sized images, etc) but it is suitable for it's purpose.
Although the site content may be bloated enough to make your modem scream, and the colour scheme isn't exactly one I'd choose for my ... ...those little grey tabs takes you to another useful area of the site, to another useful little function.
The drive space originally given to you is 35MB, but this can be increased to 100MB through the use of a referrals system. This system is that, whenever you send a referral e-mail to a friend, you receive 5MB extra online drive space, and an additional 5MB if that person then signs up to X-Drive.
Of course, there are ways to manipulate this. ...
