The founders of yahoo.com are now rich, but their shares have fallen in price. The site itself is very good, and recently they have removed all entries in the search engine that go to pornographic sites following allegations against them. You only get links to good sites, (but they may be old, which I will explain later) which are relevant to your site as long as you type the right thing in the search box.
There are a lot of 'extra' things that Yahoo! have on the site:
Yahoo! Search: As a search engine, Yahoo! has gone from best to (in my opinion) worst, it is still largely used, but it doesn't have many new links. I tried to get my site added to it three times, and I still haven't seen it added. It still has the links it gave a year ago. If they want to keep being used, they need to start getting more sites and new sites into the searches. The only really good thing about using it is that if you don't want to use any of the links it gives, just click web pages and you get links from google.com
Yahoo! Messenger (read my opinion on it for detail)
Yahoo! News: Always up to date with all the latest news, from all over the world or according to your own region. The regions only work if say you are in the UK you would go to yahoo.co.uk or in Germany it would be yahoo.de
Yahoo! Auction: On the auctions, you can buy basically anything you want and most of the things in it are available at reasonable prices. You can buy anything from a new PlayStation 2 to a Food Processor. You can either search it or go through the category.
Yahoo! Mail: I rather the Yahoo mail to Hotmail, because it is quicker to load and easier to use. It also gives you access to other areas of the site, like the Fantasy Games. It can be used as a mainstream email or just as an account to give you access to using messenger.
Yahoo! Shopping: You can buy things here either through the auctions, Yahoo! themselves or from other dealers, like sports shops and B&Q. It is very easy to use and stocks nearly everything. If you can't find what you're looking you will be sent on to the auctions to look there.
Yahoo! Chat: This has really been the best and worst point of Yahoo! It was a brilliant place to meet new people, but there were and are too many bad people in the chat room. One chat room lead to a child being raped, which was a terrible thing to have happened to such a reputable company. The worst thing a bout it is that the company still haven't closed the chat room in which the paedophile meet his victim. This really has been a bad decision by the company.
Yahoo! Properties: I haven't used this service, but like most of them I have went through it and it is easy to use (If you have had a bad experience with them, please let me know so I can add it in).
Yahoo Jobs: You can even find yourself a job while browsing the site. I haven't tried this either, but it is easy to use from just browsing it I don't know how reputable the jobs companies themselves are.
Yahoo! GeoCities: I used to have my Site on GeoCities, but when I found that they only gave you 12mb of space and that my site had a lot of graphics in it, I had to move. If you don't have a very big site, this is a good server to put it on. It's free (which of course is good), but so is fortunecity, which has 100mb of space. The speeds of the servers themselves are relatively quick, but there are a lot of site on the servers, which slows it down a bit.
Yahoo! Clubs: These I like, you can either join other peoples clubs or start your own, which is very good, especially if you can't find one you would like to join.
Yahoo! Mobile: Want to keep up-to-date with what's going on in your favourite Premiership football team? You can get Yahoo! to send you a message to your phone to tell (not working at time of writing). You can also get Icons and Ringtones for your Nokia phone (if you have one) but they do cost.
Yahoo! Photos: Want to share your photos with people, but not have to create your own website? Then this will be just what you want. You can add your own photos to you account and then anyone (or only people you want) can go and visit them.
There are loads of other things on the yahoo.co.uk site, but I don't want to bore you anymore with them (if I haven't already!). If you want a search engine go for google. For a site with special features then Yahoo! will most likely have the things you want.
Many people will disagree, but go check it out and make your own mind up, and if you already disagree, go and look at the site from this angle and see if that changes your mind.
