Yahoo! Mail is so great that I had to write an opinion on the matter. Ever since I became a member in 1998 I have used it as my main e-mail address although I have used other email addresses in the past I have found this to be the best for nothing.
~ What’s it all about ~
Apart from being e-mail that is completely free (unless you get a larger mail box) it provides many free services when you sign up such as My Yahoo! that contains your personal settings for news and Yahoo! categories such as sports news and horoscopes (amongst others). It can also be set for American news and other countries if you want to, that is a great option if you require it. The fact that you have a password-protected account is great (most do) so it is unlikely that any one apart from the sender knows what you are reading. I love the address book because you can forward all those weird and wonderful e-mails to your friend.
~ The competition ~
I have used several other web based free e-mail accounts before and find this easiest of the lot to navigate. I have used Hotmail and Star mail before but have not used them for years purely because they kept updating them and things did not always work that is annoying if you are in a hurry. My friends also rate this highly and this has to be one of the most common mail domains in my address book. One of my friends has recently signed up to Yahoo! again having been very dissatisfied with his old mail (Metallica) after numerous problems with loading and delayed e-mail (although the site has been redone). I have yet to find a free e-mail provider with as many services available. You can even change the colour and in some cases the layout of the site for your personal preferences.
~ Speed ~
The loading speed of the site is good even though we have a slow server here; this is mainly due to the fairly uncomplicated nature of the site. It can sometimes be slow when there are lots of people logged onto the server (this is a school server so it is fairly pants at the best of times).
~ Value ~
Free, what else can I say? Even the extra features are of some value; extended inbox facilities and so on are good for those who use their Yahoo! Mail for everything (e.g. they have no other mail account).
~ Final verdict ~
I love the features, use it everyday to obtain all the information that I need as well as check my mail, can’t complain about that can we if there is nothing to pay.
I recommend it to those looking for an account that will cost nothing for them to use.
