Geocities is one of the biggest webhosting sites on the internet and Really couldn't be any easier to use. All you have to do is either already be a member of yahoo with your own screen name or sign up if your not. The only thing you need is an idea for a website and the will to update it regulary or stick with it untill its finished.
My advice to start off with is if you are amazing at making web pages with
using only HTML ... ...(which I use) make your site offline and upload it. If you are new to the web page building business but are desperate to make a site then geocities.com really is the site you need. They offer a lot of stuff to help your webpage look good. Fist of all you can choose one of their own backrounds and layouts to use, you can then either upload pictures from your computer or you can choose some of the pictures Geocities.com have to offer. My advice to start off with is if you are amazing at making web pages with using only HTML codes then get a decent website making prgram like arachnophilia (which I use) make your site offline and upload it. All you need ot do then is add some writing in and then make some more pages.
Going back to what I said before about the website building programs like arachnophilia, well you can use geocities own advanced HTML editor but i prefer to stick with the programs. Once you have made your site whatever way you have made it you can now add the some of the following things free of charge from Geocities.com:
1)A guest book - so your visiters to leave comments about your site. 2)A counter - so that you and your visiters can see how many people have been to your site. 3)The weather - you can have weather from any in England on there. 4)Yahoo search - so people can search yahoo from your site. 5)Your birthday countdown clock - If it is a site about yourself this can be used but it counts down your birthday in American time.
There are many many more features but I won't write about them incase if you aren't already bored with this opinon you become more bored.
They also have a thing called site statisics which tell you lots of information about your visters who visit your page. It can tall you how many visited what page, the date and the hour tyhey visited in, how they got to your site, what browser they used and much more.
If like me you do your page offline and upload you pictures and your pages then the facility they have for you to edit them is very good. You can see easily what you have uploaded what time it was last edited and it make them easy to delete aswell.
When I first tried to find a webhost for my site I automatically went to fortune city because I thought it must be good with 100 mb off free space. Don't get me wrong i'm not saying it isn't good but what I am saying is firstly you don't need 100 MB unless you are creating a supersite and secondly they help is rubbish. When you sign up to them they get your page ready for you and if you go onto your site you find that it says I'll be moving in soon.
Now with me being new to all the stuff when I did this I wanted to put my front page up so i deleted what they had up there. I uploaded my page and found that I couldn't get it up on my proper site. I e-mailed them and asked them. After 4 days wuith no reply I went looking else where. I found geocities and did exactly the same. But this time it actually told me why it wouldn't work. It stated that I ahd no index.html. I changed my main page to that and it worked. After 2 weeks fourtune city e-mailed me back telling me exactly what I had just done.
Overall I rate Geocities better than Fortune city and reccommend it to any new webpage builder.
Advantages: Easy to use, free of charge Disadvantages: An irritating bug (see op for details)
Geocities are the people I use to host my website – neither my site nor their service is particularly glamorous, they do ‘exactly what it says on the tin’ and leave the bells and whistles for other people. I’ve only ever used one other server, Acmecity, so I can’t really compare Geocities to the range of alternatives and let’s just say I got fed up with Acmecity and leave it at that, shall we? OK, let’s not, let’s gleefully add that Acmecity is, ... ...of its rivals, and presumably greatly improved.
Before I launch into the body of this opinion, I apologise for any jargon that I use, particularly if I get it slightly wrong. I’m not much of a techie, and I’m assuming that people reading this aren’t either, but if you’re reading an op on Geocities then you probably know what Java, HTML and what have you are already.
Probably the biggest whinge anyone has with Geocities is the advertising placed ...

Advantages: Free Service, Just brilliant Disadvantages: Ugly Web Address
When I first wanted to build a webpage I really didn't want to buy a domain as their mega-bucks! I started looking around places such as, Homestead, and Tripod. But none of them suited me! Homestead was to easy and was for a first time creater and and just didn't fancy Tripod. So I went to yahoo and searched, 'Free Webpage' and it came up with Yahoo Gocities. I signed up and was given a free webpage.
The first thing that come up when your logged ... ...are 5 ways of ceating a webpage with Yahoo:
1) Yahoo PageWizards. This is the simplist way of creating a webpage. You just answer a few question, choose your style and add the text, and there you go! This is for the firs timers! EASY!
2) Yahoo PageBuilder. This is the middle way. This Page builder is a drop & Drag builder. Where you choose the function and place it on the page. This is relativly easy but you have to think. This option give you ...

Advantages: Always running, FTP AND web-based access Disadvantages: Limited amount of web space, no CGI
Yahoo® Geocities® is a good all round web hosting service. It has been my preferred hosting service for some time now. Load speeds are consistently good, and Geocities give each member a reasonable amount of space to put a web site on – of course if you desperately need more space there is no reason not to sign up an additional account and place files in that space.
Being backed by a major Internet company, Geocities is up just about 100% ... ...any of my sites on it not to be working. The web site address you are given on Geocities consists of simply http://www.geocities.com/username. I find it best to use an URL redirection service to get a better address (e.g. a free sub domain redirection service like www.wxs.org).
There is a smaller-than-usual advert placed on each page of your site, using JavaScript®, so that the end user can close it if they wish. This has the advantage of enabling ...

Advantages: Free, Feature-Rich, Intuitive Disadvantages: Sometimes Unresponsive, Tools have niggly problems
Geocities lets you put together a website without spending any cash. I wanted to put together my own website for a number of reasons: so my friends could see some of my photos, to enhance my employability by attaining new skills and not least just for the experience of it. Not having a PC at home, I needed a cost-free connection that was simple to pick up and use. Geocities fitted the bill nicely.
FREE SPACE
I already had a Yahoo! mail account ... ...the form and voila, I had a username and password granting me access to my very own website. They allocated me 15M bytes of space and access to more tools than I could shake a (virtual) stick at, or at least more tools than I could be bothered to learn how to use. BIG TOOLS
Aside from the efficient file management system there are several options for adding content, including an interface to Front Page (should you wish to use it!), a raw html editor ...

When I wanted to start creating a website, I knew right from the start that I didn't want to pay for a domain name. I was looking for the best free webpage hosting that didn't require much web design skills, but still made you have a professional style page. I tried the AOL website creator but it allowed you to just place your personal information, and it was on 3rd grade level. I tried other confusing hosts like Tripod and Xoom, and none of them ... ...net with Yahoo! I discovered that they had free internet hosting, called Geocitites. If you already have a Yahoo! email address like I did then you are all set for Geocities. Right from the start you know that Geocities will be fun, you move into an area (Broadway for instance if you are making it about plays), and give a brief description of what your page is going to be about.
Next you go to the page builder, which takes about 3 minutes to load. ...
