When I wanted to start creating a website, I knew right from the start that I didn't want to pay for a domain name. I was looking for the best free webpage hosting that didn't require much web design skills, but still made you have a professional style page. I tried the AOL website creator but it allowed you to just place your personal information, and it was on 3rd grade level. I tried other confusing hosts like Tripod and Xoom, and none of them worked right for me. Finally when I was searching the net with Yahoo! I discovered that they had free internet hosting, called Geocitites. If you already have a Yahoo! email address like I did then you are all set for Geocities. Right from the start you know that Geocities will be fun, you move into an area (Broadway for instance if you are making it about plays), and give a brief description of what your page is going to be about.
Next you go to the page builder, which takes about 3 minutes to load. This is like a separate program that opens up in a new window. You are not doing your design on a website like in other free hosts. Tons of options are available for you to use, add text, upload your picture, show your favorite sites, all of the basic things you would expect from your average page maker. Geocities offers many things that other free hosts don't though such as allowing you to make a Java app. with moving pictures. Add your own message board so those visitors can leave their mark, or add a counter to track how many times you've been hit.
Geocities also provides many predone page templates like your favorite movie page or a page about your new baby. When you use the predone templates all you have to do is fill in the text and picture areas and then you have a great looking page all set up. If a predone page doesn't fit the kind of page you like, you can also run a blank page, and start from scratch.
Geocities allows you 8MB of web space, which is more than most people will ever need, and if you do run out of space they sometimes can provide you with more.
Anyone who has basic web skills can use Geocities in a flash. My page visitors ask me how I have such great skills in html design, but actually Yahoo! Geocities does it all for you. You have to give it a try, and it is FREE!

NB, there is a way of getting rid of the banners as I have done it! To do this, you must edit one page at a time and right after the </html> tag, open up a title tag <title>, and it thinks you are placing the banner in the title but you already have one so it dissapears!
Thats a great tip (although it won't affect me as I don't have a geocities website).
Yet another great opinion by you.

Excellent opinion - think you'll find that Mr Yahoo's gonna be mighty upset (and possibly close down your site) when he finds out you've taken down his banner (and thus reason for giving you the webspace in the first place.)
